Yesterday I was on Mill Ave using my computer at a coffee shop. I lost my connection so and couldn't get it to work for anything. I was looking over my shoulders back and forth and no one else seemed to be having this problem. Frustrated I finally packed up and left, disappointed in the internet service and my $4 Italian soda. The mint sucks.
I had everything loaded onto my motorcycle when I had the feeling to take a walk down Mill. I really didn't feel like it to much but I went with it. I've got my earbuds in...music playing...not really paying attention to anything but watching it all. Someone says something to me. I look down. Some dirty guy with a hiking pack.
"Do you have any change?"
"No man, no one carries money anymore...it's all credit cards"
"Could you buy me a burger? I'm real hungry."
"Your hungry man?
"Yeah..."
"Come one man let's get you something to eat."
I started to walk off...He caught up with his pack and his bike. He didn't look to old. Said his name was James. James lived in Florida. He said he has two years sobriety and came out to AZ to work for his sponsor. Well that guy et him down because the sponsor began drinking, there was a fight between the wife and sponsor...well, James no longer had work here in AZ. A local church had given him a bike.
"I have to get back...looks like I'm biking it."
Whoa.
I only had a few dollars in my account. I stood in line at fatburger and thought for a moment.
"Get whatever you want James."
Large burger. Large drink. Large fries.
I grabbed a little burger and sat down with him. He was just talking about his story. I couldn't help but feel grateful for my life and what I have. He pulled out a collection of small tokens....his greatest possessions he said. They were his 1 and 2 year sober tokens from AA. He had a small greenish stone that was polished smooth too. It use to say something about letting God handle things...But he had rubbed it so many times when worrying about things that all that was left was a smooth surface. His worries had rubbed off all the words.
When our order came he took a moment and prayed for whatever he had in his mind at the time to say to God.
"Thanx for this." He told me that looking me in the eye.
We spent an hour together. My life has been rough. Harder than most. I don't live a normal life. What most people consider problems I would consider a leap up from what I deal with. But James has troubles too. I don't ever want to get so caught up in my issues that I stop taking the time to help someone else with theirs. Karma.
I hope you make it to Florida James.
